Richard Bushman on the value of Dialogue, Sunstone, and Mormon Blogs

In a recent series of interviews with John Dehlin at Mormon Stories, Richard Bushman made some comments about Sunstone and the Sunstone Symposium that strike at a number of challenges those of us in this community face. I don’t want this post to overshadow the significance of the content of these interviews, as the comments [...]

“Shame on the Los Angeles Times!”

“SHAME ON THE LOS ANGELES TIMES!”-Clifton Jolley, 2006 SLC Sunstone Symposium
With his voice rising and falling like a street preacher possessed by the Holy Spirit, and in a talk that can only be characterized as a degree or two shy of “performance art,” Clifton Jolley may have stolen the show at the 2006 SLC Sunstone [...]

Not of this fold?

Arriving at my first symposium several years ago, I was pleasantly surprised to see people I admired wearing sleeveless dresses and carrying Starbucks cups (I did pass judgment that they were not patronizing one of the fine independent coffee shops in downtown SLC). It is clear that you don’t have to be a practicing [...]

Bad Stories

In the 2006 Sunstone Symposium panel discussion, Art from the Dark Side of Happy Valley (#SL6271), Richard Dutcher said Max Golightly, his professor at BYU, had once told him, “The first, great Mormon writer is going to be excommunicated.”
In years past, I would have seen this prediction as a form of posturing, but I have [...]

For men only?

During my 5+ years of participation in Sunstone, I’ve noticed that the magazine, the Symposium (and the blog) tend to be dominated by men.  I’ve wondered why this is the case, because women are more marginalized by LDS institutions and I would think that they would be the most eager to participate in an alternate [...]

Lament of the Bridge

In the wake of the Sunstone Symposium an interesting conversation occurred on the Association for Mormon Letters email list.

Feminist Mormon Dads dot com

Two weeks ago I skipped Sunday School (again) and slipped into Primary, as I much prefer to sit in the back of the primary room and watch my four-year-old son participate. The sharing time lesson that day was on Scripture Heroes. It consisted of pictures of different individuals placed face down on a table, while [...]

How The Sugar Beet Solved None of My Problems

I was going to present this paper at the Sugar Beet session at the Sunstone Symposium, but we were having a lot of fun and I didn’t want to offend whatever spirit had come to visit (it may have possibly been Sherwood Schwartz’s spirit).
The first article I wrote for the Sugar Beet was entitled [...]
