The Decision to Serve

In an article I am working on with the hopes of eventual submission to Sunstone for publication, I will explore the decision processes used by today’s young men and women as they decide whether or not to serve a full-time mission. For some, this decision is a simple one. For others, it may require a lot of thought and a lot of time. I am interested in both types of experiences.

I am most interested in the thoughts and experiences of young adults who have made decisions to serve, or not to serve, full-time LDS missions subsequent to the November 2002 raising of the standards for missionary service by the First Presidency.

If you or someone you know may be interested in submitting your own experiences to assist me in this article, please send me an email to eliseejohnson with gmail as the email provider, or at the address listed in my Sunstone “about me” bio to the left. I will reply to your email with a one-page letter that further describes in detail the specific items I would like to address.

  1. I prayed about and received a confirmation from the spirit tha the decision to go on a Mission was a right one and that I would be happy. I went on a mission to Brasil and it was the best thing I did,
So not much just what Joseph Smith did, I ask the one i was going to serve , the Lord.
Now I’m a girl, i know that the boys have received from the Lord Jesus Christ himself and priesthood holders to proclaim the gospel, is there is the New Testament, it was not just for Peter, James and John but all those who have the priesthood. It’s good to get out of you buble and to think about others, it is good to serve, keeps us less selfish, after all is not about us…
