Introducing Rick Jepson — Our Newest SunstoneBlog Contributor

Rick Jepson's PhotoIt’s with great pleasure that we introduce Rick Jepson as our newest SunstoneBlog contributor. Many of you will remember Rick as the author of the November 2005 Sunstone cover article, “Godwrestling: Physicality, Conflict, and Redemption in Mormon Doctrine,” and for the SunstonePodcast interview that followed (SunstonePodcast #05, see 29 December 2005 blogpost). Rick is also the editor of a new Sunstone column that debuts in the coming issue of the magazine. The column is called “Bounds and Conditions” and deals with the intersection of Mormonism with science and health issues.

Rick is a research-oriented RN, who is currently working on alternative therapies for treating certain kinds of strokes. He is also a competitive wrestler in the early stages of a project to train and wrestle at a high level in ten different wrestling styles over the next ten years. When completed, he plans to write a book about this odyssey. His first competition in a new tradition, Scottish-style wrestling (complete with kilts!), is this June in Utah’s Thanksgiving Point.

Rick and his wife, Wendy, and their two children live in Orem, Utah.

Buenos Dias everyone. I’m the newbie. I’m thrilled to be here, and especially to edit the new science/health column, Bounds & Conditions. I will say that the opportunity comes more from my enthusiasm than any expertise…..for despite my ambitions I am currently more a devotee to science than a master of it. As with all my preoccupations (wrestling, writing, love making, etc) I am myself merely adequate….but am proficient enough to recognize and benefit from the genius of others.

I am also excited to finally jump on board with the sunstoneblog, especially because it may help me wean from an addiction to another online forum of ultimate fighters who are religious. (http://www.mma.tv/tuf/index.cfm?ac=SetMasterFrame&FID=71&PID=2 I use the screen name “Tulkas”; if you recognize that, you’re a nerd.)

It’s a fun place, but the token Mormon takes some abuse sometimes, so maybe I’ll feel more at home here…a good counterbalance.

Also, I’d like to invite everyone to give some input on a current article. We’re trying to highlight 10-15 of the best articles written about science and Mormonism. In the next issue of SUNSTONE, we’ll run the list with a little explanation and sample quote from each.

I already know some of my own favorites (e.g. David Bailey’s “Scientific Foundations of Mormon Theology” and Duane Jeffrey’s “Saints, Seers, and Savants”), but we’d really like to hear from all of you.

What have you found in SUNSTONE, Dialogue, BYU Studies, or other journals that has really struck you as an important treatment of science from the LDS perspective????

I took a class from Dr. Duane Jeffreys and he gave us what was then a manuscript called Evolution and Mormonism. I believe it has since been published and has a subtitle of A Quest for Understanding.

As for you Rick, congrats on the permablogger position. I knew I’d find you on the internet someday.
